What inspires me as an artist? If I had to boil it all down, there are three things that inspire me the most.
The first is nature.
Certain landscapes make me feel spectacularly alive, such as the gorgeous red rock landscape of Sedona:
The fabulous colors of autumn in New Hampshire:
And the wide open mountain views in Montana:
I can’t get enough of views like that.
Some people prefer vacations at posh hotels with lots of area shopping. Me? Give me a cabin in the mountains, good walking shoes, a few painting supplies, a deck of playing cards, and laid back company. That’s my happy place.
My heart also does a little flip when nature shows off with a brilliantly colorful sunset, an enormous full moon rising, a stormy day at the ocean with waves crashing on the rocks, or spotting an elusive elk on a morning walk.
The second thing that inspires me is, and I’m not sure how to explain this, but it’s my intuition and the connection I sense with the animals and nature around us. What I most want to capture in my paintings is not how the world is. Not a landscape or an animal portrait exactly as it is, but rather the sweet, loving connection I sense we could and do have with these things.
Fox Woman “Caring is Sharing” 5 x 7 acrylic painting on canvas $75
You could say, I paint how I wish the world to be. The world I see in my inner vision, is a world where we cherish and appreciate each other, the animals, and our planet.
Calling in the Magic 24″ x 24″ acrylic painting on canvas $675
On a metaphysical level, everything in our universe loves us and is here to serve and help us, if only we are open to it. I hope to help others see and feel this too.
The third thing that inspires me is the creative process itself. Want to see me get all jazzed up? Then, let’s talk about all things creative. Need a brainstorming partner, I’m your girl. (Seriously, call me!) For me creating is like breathing. I must do it. I love to do it! This is why marketing and design and art-making are such fabulous outlets for me. I love problem solving, finding unique ways of doing things, generating new ideas, and expressing the un-expressible. It’s also one of the reasons I’m good at intuitive healing. When I’m not sure what’s needed next during a healing session, I intuitively consult with my Spirit Guides or the client’s, and the inspired guidance drops in. When clients tell me how amazing their session was and ask I knew to do such and such, I joke that I’m not that smart. Well I am smart, but Divine intelligence is way smarter than me! And, that’s the Source I work with and tune into during my healing work. We are all connected to universal consciousness. All the ideas and inspiration we need are right there, just waiting for us to tap into them.
Placing the Stars 8″x10″ acrylic painting on canvas panel $125
Did you know the word inspiration comes from the Latin “inspirare”, which means “to breathe into”? Inspiration gives us the ability to breathe life into our creations, just as I imagine our Creator breathed us into life. So cool to think of it that way.
