Two Branches of Energy Medicine

Energy Medicine: Two Branches of Energy Medicine and the Basic Healing Formula

by Natalie Eve Marquis, Reiki Master Teacher & Master Hypnotist

Energy Medicine is a word coined by three researchers who gathered at Boulder, Colorado, USA in the late 1980s. It is defined as any energetic or informational interaction with a biological system to bring back homeostasis in the organism.

Energy medicine is based upon the belief that changes in the “life force” of the body, including the electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields, affect human health and can promote healing.

Energy Medicine encompasses two types of energy work: veritable, which can be measured, and putative, a subtle energy, which cannot be measured with our current technology.

Examples of veritable energy medicine include things like sound therapy (vibrational energy), UV light for seasonal affective disorder, and magnetic therapy, which places magnets on the body to release pain.

Putative energy medicine is based on the fundamental premise that the human body and its psychological processes are expressions of energy, which are infused with “subtle” energy or life force. It is believed that changing impaired energy patterns may be the most efficient way to heal the human mind/body/spirit.

The Basic Energy Healing “Formula”

I am certified in three energy healing modalities and have researched and read about at least a dozen or so more. While each has its own unique philosophy and methodology, I believe that most of them can be boiled down to the following basic formula:

Life Force Energy + Intention – Ego = Energy Healing

Energy Healing is a practice where one uses focused intention to direct divine life force energy to a person, animal, place or thing to bring about healing and/or positive change.

The healing itself is directed by “spiritual life force energy”, not the individual’s analytical mind or preferences (i.e. the ego), and hence the process works best if we subtract out the healer’s ego.
