This is a very short story about intuition…
One cold winter’s day in New Hampshire, I accidentally let my son’s beloved black and white bunny, Oreo, out of his pen. Oreo dashed out into the horse pasture. I desperately chased after it, trying to catch it. Just when I’d get close enough to grab him, Oreo would dart off in other direction. Nothing I did was working. I was choking back a sob and just about to give up, when a voice outside of myself but in my head, said “Throw your jacket over the bunny.” As I continued to chase after Oreo, I took off my winter coat, and when I got close enough again, I threw it over the bunny. Oreo immediately stopped, I scooped him up and all was well. Intuition saved the day.
The inspiration to catch the bunny by throwing my jacket over it came totally out of the blue, and it ended up being the perfect solution. It also felt like the guidance came from somewhere outside of myself. And this is what intuition feels like for me. The thoughts, words, or “sense” of things, happens inside my head but it doesn’t feel like it comes from my own thinking mind. It’s a very subtle difference.
And therein lies the challenge of working with intuition. It’s a subtle skill. You can’t pump iron in a gym to build your intuitive “muscles.” Instead you have to learn listen for that quiet voice, impression or nudge, then trust and take action on it.
The quiet voice of intuition speaks to us all. But we don’t always listen. We’ve been taught to be nice, to not judge people, and to do things contrary to what our “gut feeling” is telling us – often to our own detriment. As Gavin de Becker says in the The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence:
“Only human beings can look directly at something, have all the information they need to make an accurate prediction, perhaps even momentarily make the accurate prediction, and then say that it isn’t so.”
Learning to embrace my intuition has made my life richer and more fulfilling. It’s made decision-making less of struggle and greatly enhanced my connection to God, as I’m now able to see and hear all the ways the Universe is speaking to me. Oh, and it’s also made me a great bunny catcher!

My intuition told me to follow this story down this rabbit hole and now all that’s left to do is say, “Thank you for the reminder.” <3
