Did you know that almost anyone can develop the ability to sense and channel energy, including you? Why would you want to do this? Learning to sense and work with energy has many benefits. It can help you:
Everything is energy and everyone can develop the ability to sense and work with subtle energy. It just requires intention and practice. Here are four ways you can begin sensing and working with subtle energy.
Clap your hands and vigorously rub them together until you feel a little heat building up. Put your attention on the center of your palms and the space between your palms.
Very slowly pull your hands about two to four inches apart, then slowly move your palms towards each other again (keeping your awareness of the space between your palms), and slowly back out to about four to six inches apart. You might feel a tingling sensation, a subtle pulling sensation, or an awareness of a light density as if the air is a little denser between your palms. If you feel or aware of either of any of these sensations you are sensing the energy! Continue to practice by moving clapping, moving your hands to about four inches apart, then in to about one or two inches apart and back out again. Also practice slowly moving them apart until you can’t sense the subtle energy between the palms anymore or until the energy sensation dissipates.

Slowly pull your hands apart until you can sense the subtle energy between them. You might feel a tingling, pulling and/or heavy sensation between the palms. That’s the sensation of subtle energy. Now cup your hands around the subtle energy and form a ball of energy. If you can’t quite feel it yet, just use your imagination to form a ball of energy. With this technique, you are using the energy of your intention, the energy flowing from your palms, and the energy in the air around you, to form a concentrated ball of energy. Once formed, you can give this ball of energy a color and an intention. For example, imagine the ball of energy is “white” with the intention of healing. Now slowly move your cupped hands with the ball of energy to a place on your body that needs healing support, such a cranky knee, shoulder pain, or to your eyes for dry or strained eyes.
I learned the “laser finger” in Qigong and it’s a wonderful technique for moving the ball of energy to a hard to reach location, such as the back of the neck or the lower, middle or upper back. To do the laser finger, first form a ball of energy (see above), give it a color (white) and intention (healing), then use the index finger of your dominate hand to slowly and intentionally move the ball of energy to any hard to reach place that you may be experiencing pain in, such as the back your shoulders, back of the neck or anywhere along the back. The key to this technique is your intention. Energy flows where attention goes. Use your intention and involve your imagination: intend to form the ball of energy, intend that ball of energy to be used for healing, imagine the ball as white healing energy, imagine your index finger slowly pushing this ball of energy to that hard to reach location, and once it gets there, imagine the energy sinking into and rebalancing the sore or painful area.
Once you’ve developed your practice of sensing and directing subtle energy long enough you can move on to practicing the more advanced technique of moving the energy with your mind and the intention of your thoughts.
For this exercise, begin by setting a clear intention such as to “form a ball of energy to heal.” The key with this technique is to know that both “intention” and “imagination” help focus your attention, and ‘energy flows where attention goes.’ Close your eyes and use your intention and imagination to form a ball of energy. Really involve your imagination by envisioning that you’re pulling or scooping energy from the chi (life force energy) that is in the air, that flows up from the earth, the pours down from the heavens, and imagine scooping and molding this life force energy into a healing ball of energy. Again, using your intention and imagination, envision moving this ball of energy to a place on your body that needs healing.
You can also practice sending this “no hands” ball of energy across distance to loved ones, and to people, places or situations that could benefit from healing energy. This is possible because in the quantum field energy has no space, time, and distance constraints. This means, the ball of energy you “send” instantly arrives wherever you intend it to. With this technique you can pray for the amazon forest and send balls of healing energy. How cool is that?!
There you have it, four easy ways to begin sensing and working with subtle energy. If you don’t sense or feel the energy right away, that’s normal. Just keep practicing!
