Don’t Give Up Your Day Job
Or … Why Rejection No Longer Hurts Me
I just discovered about a dozen or more emails that I never received through my art licensing website http://nataliemarquis.com (formerly natalietimmons.com). My fault entirely as I had pretty much abandoned the site at the time of my divorce. I corrected the form’s setup this morning. But came across this one email in which someone actually took the time to fill out the form and tell me my art was horrible!
It made me realize how much I’ve grown emotionally and spiritually, especially post-divorce (2013). Years ago a comment like that might have crushed me or even to a lessor degree offended me. When I came across it this morning, I just thought, “Wow Jack must have been in a lot of angry pain to take time to send such a message. I hope he’s doing better these days.”
The truth is not everyone is going to like me, or my art. And I am happy to report that I’m completely okay with that. It’s impossible to please and be appealing to absolutely everyone on the planet …jeesh what a burden even if it were possible! In any case, I’ve come to learn when someone doesn’t like me or my art (I originally wrote “my heart” …interesting freudian slip), it’s just their personal preference. You like oranges and I like bananas. One is not better or worse than the other. It means nothing about my value or worth. It’s just a preference, no big deal.
Knowing this makes me more bold. I can offer my art, marketing, healing services or even ask a handsome man to dance! If someone says no, of course I’ll be disappointed, but I definitely won’t take it personally.
Oh, and the other upside of this, is that I discovered a few inquiries from folks interested in licensing or using my art.
So remember, it’s not personal and just keep putting yourself out there!
